Santorini's Best Sunset Spots

Whether you are a first-time traveler or a seasoned world explorer, it is a known fact that no visit to Santorini can be complete without experiencing the ritual of sunset gazing. The sun may indeed set in every corner of the world but trust us when we tell you: in Santorini, it puts on a show! Although some might argue that every part of the island is ideal for this activity (especially with a loved one by your side,) if you’re looking for the very best sunset spots Santorini has to offer, both popular and off the beaten track, here are some of our suggestions:

Oia

Ever heard of applause-worthy sunsets? Watching the sunset from the rooftops of Oia is a signature Santorini experience, and although some might tell you it’s overhyped, we believe staples exist for a reason. Come early and be prepared to fend off an errant selfie stick or two but make no mistake: this is an experience that must be felt to be believed. Secure a front row seat to this million-year old show and drink everything in, as the sun slowly takes its dip beneath the sleeping volcano. Watching the sky and sea set aflame with blazing red and brilliant orange hues is a sight that can move even the most cynical of hearts to clapping. But don’t worry; we won’t tell if you don’t.

Ammoudi Bay

The quaint little port right underneath the village of Oia is also a great choice for sunset lovers. Tranquil waves lap up the stones beneath dramatic cliffs, whose red-hued soil is a perfect match to the colors of the setting sun. Let the calm movement of the fishing boats gently bopping with the waves set your mind at ease, dip your toes in the port’s azure waters or -why not- indulge at one of Ammoudi’s traditional Greek fish tavernas.

Imerovigli

A slightly less crowded yet no less spectacular alternative to Oia, this “balcony to the Aegean” as it is famously known, offers showstopping sunset views. Skaros rock, the caldera and a smattering of volcanic islets make up the idyllic setting: the sun and the sea take care of the rest. Lose yourself in a moment of divine stillness as shades of orange, pink and violet melt together with the Aegean blue in a majestic amalgamation of color whose memory is sure to warm up even the coldest of winter nights.

The Lighthouse at Akrotiri Bay

For the more adventurous traveler, we suggest you take on the rough, otherworldly terrain at Akrotiri Bay, to reach its lighthouse -or “Faros” as the Greeks call it. The jutting rocks and prickly Greek wildlife make for a more rugged setting but the transcendent feeling of being one with nature is rewarding as few others. The absence of large crowds is another welcome boon.

At sea

As romantic as they come, we couldn’t imagine a more enchanting setting or a more intimate closeness to the elements as being onboard a sailing yacht in Santorini when the sun sets. Book a seat in one of the island’s many sunset tours and imagine yourself looking up at the white-washed villages perched atop the caldera, as the colors of the setting sun bounce off their curved walls – with the added bonus of sipping on Vinsanto wine and enjoying delicious Greek finger food all the while. A high-spirited captain might even turn up the music to turn your sunset gazing experience into a proper celebration.

Already planning your trip? Take your pick from one, two or all of our suggestions but remember: all comparison pales in front of the real thing.
